Effective October 1st, 1997 the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission has designated the Silver Dollar Casino as Calgary's only rural casino to serve charitable organizations from outside Calgary. This surrounding area specifically includes Lake Louise to the west, Crossfield to the north, Cluny to the east and Nanton to the south.

This permits charities in close proximity to Calgary to the convenience of holding a casino in Calgary. This in effect provides rural charities an opportunity to increase their revenue from a casino while at the same time reducing costs.
